It's an impressive list until you realize that Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte all played their first games for New York in 1995, meaning Shaughnessy is referring to player development that happened over 15 years ago*.

* Bill Clinton was president, the internet was still getting off the ground, and Nancy Kerrigan was screaming "why me, why me, why me!".

Looking at players developed this century we're left with Robinson Cano: good player, Phil Hughes: a failure as a starter that's shown some promise as a reliever, Joba Chamberlain: lots of talent but little to show for it except lap dances and DUIs, and Melky Cabrera: a below average player you would have never heard of if he played for anyone other than New York.

Not quite as impressive.
