Cynicism
From Conan O'Brien's farewell speech:
All I ask is one thing: please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. For the record it's my least favorite quality; it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.
Most people will latch on to the phrase 'work really hard' and miss out on the key word: 'kind'.
A Winter Day in Florida
Waffle House breakfast, dinner grilled by a lake, roasted marshmellows and white russians for dessert. Now waiting for snow that probably won't show, but it's really hard to complain.
Maple Tree
Recently a prominent landscaper took one look at our maple tree and called it possibly "the most beautiful" she had ever seen. Every winter it turns this color for a few weeks; a glowing orangish-red. Pulling into the driveway, surrounded by green, it almost looks neon. The picture doesn't do it justice. It takes your breath away.
I'm not that interested in plants and flowers and bushes. My father certainly was; my mother and brother also. Me? That gene passed me by. But I have a thing for trees. When I imagine a beautiful yard I think of maples, cherry blossoms, and giant oaks.
I guess it has something to do with their longevity; the knowledge that long after I'm gone that beautiful maple tree will still be turning red each winter.
