Red Sox, Lackey agree to five-year deal

Free agent right-hander John Lackey agreed to a deal with Boston on Monday reportedly worth as much as $87.5 million over five years.

Signing John Lackey along with outfielder Mike Cameron points to a Red Sox team built on pitching and fielding rather than slugging. Considering they'll never 'out Yankee' the Yankees, and a run prevented is as good as one scored, I approve.

Sad to see Jason Bay move on. I enjoyed the season and a half he spent in left field. But I won't miss seeing what a 31 year old that strikes out in huge numbers and plays terrible defense looks like when he's 35.

Surprisingly Shaughnessy Didn't Include DiMaggio

Oh, and last time I checked the Yankees developed Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte, Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, Phil Hughes, and Joba Chamberlain.

Dan Shaughnessy, doing his patented hatchet job on the Red Sox, points with pride to Yankee player development. It's an impressive list until you realize that Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte all played their first games for New York in 1995, meaning Shaughnessy is referring to player development that happened over 15 years ago*.

* Bill Clinton was president, the internet was still getting off the ground, and Nancy Kerrigan was screaming "why me, why me, why me!".

Looking at players developed this century we're left with Robinson Cano: good player, Phil Hughes: a failure as a starter that's shown some promise as a reliever, Joba Chamberlain: lots of talent but little to show for it except lap dances and DUIs, and Melky Cabrera: a below average player you would have never heard of if he played for anyone other than New York.

Not quite as impressive.
